Increasing the efficiency of biological wastewater treatment with MagTreat

Wastewater treatment of industrial enterprises is extremely important for the ecology of our planet. While lawmakers work to minimize the amount of harmful emissions into water bodies, scientists and entrepreneurs struggle over the improvement of the way industrial wastewater is treated. Biological wastewater treatment is one of the main stages of wastewater treatment at housing and public utilities, pulp and paper plants, food industries, chemical plants producing alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks. In fact, this is cleaning of the dissolved part of the contamination with activated sludge or, in other words, bacteria.

The first stage of biological treatment is always nitrification, during which it is necessary to maintain a strictly defined pH at the level of 8.2-8.4 and the content of dissolved oxygen at least at 6 mg / l. But since this is an aerobic process, acid begins to form over time, which leads to a drop in pH and a slowdown in the nitrification process until it stops completely, because bacteria are inactive in an acidic environment.

It seems that magnesium hydroxide (Mg (OH)2) was created by nature just for improvement of this process. MagTreat®-S in the form of suspension is magnesium hydroxide, obtained from the natural mineral brucite in an environmentally friendly way. Due to its natural alkaline properties, not only helps the product to effectively solve the problem of adjusting the pH of the incoming effluent which is fed to nitrification, but it also maintains the pH at such an optimal level, at which the activated sludge works most effectively. It is impossible to overdose MagTreat®, since it forms a buffer system at the pH of 8.3-8.5 with moderate overdose and of 9.0 with multiple overdose. Therefore, the pH of the system will not drop until all the reagent is smoothly spent on neutralization.

It is impossible to achieve such an effect with NaOH (caustic soda), since caustic soda even with a small overdose raises the pH to 13-14, which immediately kills all activated sludge. It is a dangerous reagent that does not form a buffer system, which leads to system destabilization. In addition, due to the low molecular weight and bivalence of magnesium, MagTreat®-S 65% neutralizes, for example, sulfuric acid by 44% more effectively than the caustic soda solution with a concentration of 50%. Finally, the cost of neutralization with the use of MagTreat® is several times lower than that with the use of NaOH.
